Emergency Plumbing Help for Homeowners

Request an estimate today

Strippractices Plumbing is a referral service. We do not do plumbing work. We connect homeowners in Eagle Mountain with independent local providers who handle urgent pipe, fixture and water heater problems, and we explain your options first.

Most emergencies start as small warnings: a damp spot, a slow drip, a rising water bill. Catching them early often means a smaller repair. If the problem is already active, the steps below show what to do before a provider arrives. You decide who to hire and what work to approve.

Plumbing Emergency? Start Here

Water is actively escaping, or sewage is backing up. Act in this order.

  • Shut off the water at the main valve.
  • Turn off power to any wet area if you can do so safely.
  • Open a low faucet to drain remaining pressure.
  • Move valuables out of the wet zone.

Then request an estimate. A provider in our network can talk through the problem and the likely next steps.

What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

An emergency is any leak or failure that causes damage or a health risk while you wait. Examples:

  • A burst or split supply pipe
  • Sewage backing up through floor drains or tubs
  • A water heater leaking at the base
  • No water at all, with signs of a break
  • A gas smell near a water heater (leave the house and contact your gas utility first)

A dripping faucet or a slow tub drain is urgent in a different sense. It can usually wait for a scheduled visit, but it should not wait forever.

Early Warning Signs Worth Acting On

Catch it early. These signs often show up days or weeks before a failure:

  • A water bill that climbs with no change in habits
  • Damp drywall, bubbling paint or a musty smell
  • Water stains on a ceiling below a bathroom
  • Low pressure at one fixture or the whole house
  • Rust-colored water or banging pipes

In homes with basements, check the walls and floor near the main line and water heater each season. Slow leaks hide there.

Why Fast Action Matters

Water spreads. Drywall, insulation and flooring absorb it. Mold can start to grow within a couple of days in damp, closed spaces. A small leak left running can turn a modest repair into a rebuild.

Acting quickly also keeps options open. A single failed section of pipe is a simpler fix than a soaked wall cavity.

Burst and Frozen Pipes

The region's cold snaps, heavy snow loads and fast spring melt are hard on plumbing. Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and unheated garages are most at risk.

If a pipe freezes but has not burst, open the faucet slightly and warm the area gently with a hair dryer or space heater kept at a safe distance. Never use an open flame.

If it has burst, shut off the main and call a provider. Do not wait for the ice to thaw. A thaw often reveals the split by flooding the space.

Water Heater Emergencies

Water heaters fail in a few predictable ways:

  • Leak at the tank base: Usually means the tank has corroded. Shut off the water supply and power or gas to the unit.
  • No hot water: Often a failed element, thermostat or pilot. Less urgent unless water is leaking.
  • Rumbling or popping: Sediment buildup. Flushing can help if caught early.
  • Relief valve discharging: Can signal excess pressure. Treat it as urgent.

Sediment builds faster where water is mineral-rich, which is common in dry climates.

What an Emergency Plumber Does

An independent provider in our network will typically:

  • Locate the source of the leak or failure
  • Stop the water and make the area safe
  • Explain the repair options and what each involves
  • Give a written quote before work starts
  • Complete the repair or a temporary fix, and tell you what remains

Some providers can also help document damage with photos and notes for an insurance claim. Some policies may cover sudden damage, so check your policy.

Know Your Options

A good provider lays out choices, not just one price. Typical choices include:

  • Repair a section: Cuts out and replaces the damaged piece.
  • Replace the fixture or valve: Better when parts are old or corroded.
  • Temporary fix: Stops the damage now, with permanent work scheduled later.
  • Full replacement: Considered when the same system keeps failing.

Ask what each costs, how long it should last and what happens if you wait. Quote before work.

Choosing an Emergency Plumber

Stress makes it easy to say yes too fast. Ask these questions first:

  • Is the provider licensed in your state?
  • Do they carry liability insurance?
  • Will they give a written quote before starting?
  • What is the call-out or diagnostic fee?
  • Do they warranty parts and labor, and for how long?

If an answer is vague, ask again or request another estimate. You are never obligated to accept the first offer. Many providers can respond quickly, and availability varies, so request a callback to check provider availability.

Newer Homes and Basements

Newer frame construction often uses plastic supply lines and tight wall cavities. Leaks can run behind finished walls for some time. Basements add risk because water collects below the leak.

Learn where your main shutoff is before you need it. Test it once a year so it does not seize.

After the Repair

When the water is off and the pipe is fixed, finish the job:

  • Dry the area fully, using fans and a dehumidifier
  • Photograph all damage before cleanup
  • Keep the invoice and the written quote
  • Contact your insurer if damage is significant
  • Ask the provider what to monitor over the next few weeks

Check the repaired area again after a week. Look for new stains, damp spots or odors.
